While other nine-year-old girls are playing dress-up with Halloween costumes and too-big dresses from their mothers’ closets, one nine-year-old from Colorado is making her own outfits with a sewing machine and dress form — and the budding designer has already earned fans in the fashion world
Kaia Aragon has always been stylish, according to her mom, Tonya — who notes that the little girl didn’t get the fashion gene from her.
But a few years ago, the homeschooled third grader started toying with making her own clothes, sewing things by hand until her parents got her a sewing machine about a year ago.
Now Kaia makes incredible outfits all by herself, and her mother has shared some of the highlights on TikTok, where she’s earned over 580,000 followers and the admiration of iconic designer Vera Wang.

A few years ago, the homeschooled third grader started toying with making her own clothes, sewing things by hand until her parents got her a sewing machine about a year ago
She’s already mastered the sewing machine and can do some complex stitches
Tonya, a stay-at-home mom, told The New York Post that Kaia was very ‘meticulous’ about her style from the time she was allowed to dress herself.
‘She would always go over the top with accessories and she would mix and match things that didn’t make sense to me but would make sense after she put it on,’ she said.
It wasn’t long before she grew interested in design and started to sew.
‘I wanted to be a fashion designer since I was four and I been sewing off and on since I was five years old,’ the little girl told KRDO.
She has mastered sewing pretty quickly, and got her own sewing machine and a dress form about a year ago.
Immediately, she got to work, sewing a dress in about an hour — and blowing away her mom.

She not only makes the dresses, but she styles and accessorizes them for cute outfits
‘It is interesting to see how her mind worked,’ her mom said
Her mom added: ‘I would just hand her a piece of fabric and within an hour she would have this beautifully designed piece because I thought it was unique I thought it was worth sharing’
‘I like that depending on what you’re wearing it can make you feel confident and brave,’ Kaia said
Designer Vera Wang commented on one video and sent her a gift with a personal note
‘It is interesting to see how her mind worked,’ Tonya said. ‘I would just hand her a piece of fabric and within an hour she would have this beautifully designed piece because I thought it was unique I thought it was worth sharing.’
Kaia has continued designing, using two sketchbooks to plan out her work and making about one look a day.
She made one dress inspired by the movie Encanto, with bright watercolor flowers. Another Disney project was inspired by Princess Jasmine, using an iridescent blue-green fabric cut into a one-sleeve dress.
She’s made most things from scratch, but also customizes pre-bought items, turning an adult cowl neck sweater into a child’s dress a bow on the hip.
A particularly impressive hot pink dress features rhinestone-embellished straps and a belt, with a contrast panel down the back and incredible leaf detailing in the threading.
‘I like that depending on what you’re wearing it can make you feel confident and brave,’ she said.

She’s already had requests from people who want to buy her designs, but her mom says she just wants her to enjoy it as a hobby for now
Kaia hopes to one day have her own company, and she’s like to employ her friends and big sister as the designers. Her brother would do models’ hair.
In fact, she’s already had people offer to pay her for designs, but Tonya isn’t ready for that yet. The proud mom says that right now, designing clothes makes Kaia happy — but if she starts fulfilling orders, it’s a job.
‘She’s only 9, she’s in third grade, she should absolutely have the opportunity to change her mind if this isn’t something she wants to do forever,’ she said.
‘She’s at the point in her life where she should explore a million other things that she enjoys.’
But Tonya does share videos of Kaia at work — and showing off her final designs — on TikTok, where some of the clips have earned millions of views.
Commenters also share their impressed reactions, predicting boundless success in her future.

She later sent Kaia a handwritten note and a purple backpack.
‘So excited to see you are already pursuing your dream of becoming a fashion designer! Congratulations and all good luck,’ the designer wrote.
Kaia, meanwhile, is just happy to do what she loves and enjoys that other people can see her work.
‘I feel happy because people all over the world are seeing my designs,’ she said.
